I’m Sorry

2021

I’ve been trying to say less sorry to people. Sometimes I even piss people off because I say sorry way too often. I get it, it can be pretty annoying. But, ugh, this is hard to change. Has a lot to do with how one is raised, you know?

Trashy 20 seconds video documentation

The installation was built inside a used-to-be-precious, prime location studio space. Possibly the most expensive artist studio one can ever get in Chicago. It was given to the full-ride scholarship MFA student in Painting department of the year. However, due to the strict visitor policy because of COVID, studio spaces like this one were vacant all-year long in the almighty Painting Department. They were all just sitting there waiting for me to invade.

A lot of the vibe in this installation was influenced by how I felt being in a ghosted (painting) community in 2020/21, trying to make art, while the world was burning down. I was constantly feeling sorry, to my painting, to the world, to the people believing in me, and to myself.

The installation was made with found objects (my old exercise paintings, videos, and trash from the community trashcan...etc). The installation also came with "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend Podcast" playing on loop in the background, which was what I usually put on while working at the studio alone overnight.
