AboutJaye (ze/zir/any) is an interdisciplinary artist from Taoyuan, Taiwan, who fully embraces the contradictions of being both anti-professional and seriously committed to zir art.
Ze navigates across various media—paintings, video, sculpture, and performance—delving into themes of ephemerality,&#38;nbsp;loss, and societal questioning. Lately, ze has expanded into digital media, examining the blurred boundaries between private and public spaces and exploring the fears and possibilities inherent in human connection.
Currently based between New York and Taoyuan, Jaye has exhibited zir work in the U.S., Russia, Germany, Spain and Taiwan. Ze also happens to be very socially awkard, which, combined with a broad but shallow skill set, makes zir interactions delightfully uncomfortable.

 “The extent to which Jaye respects — or, indeed, even understands — the funny/serious dichotomy is unclear.” —— Nic Johnson, Art Critic from the University of Chicago

-from Friedrich Nietzsche’s
On the Advantage and Disadvantage of History for LifeWednesday September 23 2026
For the past 10 months, I’ve been humbled by how much mental stress can directly influence the health of the physical body. Anyway, I’ve been forced to move (back) to Taiwan due to the current political reality. All my belongings are still in New York. Luckily, I found shelter in a national arts university in Taipei and is now a graduate student again.&#38;nbsp;
Saturday March 29 2025
I really need to stop losing my phone.

Friday August 2 2024Received a lot of rejections this week. I’ve always pride myself with terrible documentation and anti-professionalism and focus more on art at the moment. However, I guess I do have to rethink about what I want with this whole professional artist thing and things I need to start doing if I really want to get any of the opportunities.
Anyway, I also thought this is a good chance and time for me to create a CV of all my rejections. The CV started in 2020. When I started my MFA in 2019, I thoguht I’d give myself 5 years to make this artist thing work. But COVID kinda took away 3 years from me, but that’s probably just an excuse for myself, I know plenty artists that strived during COVID instead. But I didn’t know shit, I didn’t know how to play the game, I was just waiting for all the cancelled opportunities to open up again instead of “networking”.
I wish all artists can be more honest about their failures, especially back then when I was asking around about artist as an career. So here’s my no bs, list of rejections for us to enjoy together.

April-May 2024
Got invited to do some mfa/mps/bfa advising gigs in nyc these two months. Feeling extremely grateful to the people who saw something in me. In particular, thanking Chloe Li, Dora Do, and Sharleen Smith.

Monday January 15 2024
In Chicago for a few days. Freezing. Spending some time with Nic. We went to watch Poor Things (2023) yesterday. It’s a really outstanding film. Calmed, doing better.

Sunday December 31 2023If I have to be competely honest to myself and this page, I really really wanted to kill myself the past few days, and especially today; I think I almost did, if it wasn’t my grandma who called and cried. Which also reminded me I currently have a partner in Chicago that cares about me dearly as well. I can’t ruin his life like this.
Sleeping on my mom’s death bed alone in Taiwan is hard. Not knowing how to drive and can’t go visit my mom’s tomb for her death anniversary is hard. Seeing my dad fucking with women my age is hard. Trying not to judge and care what’s going on in the world is hard. All the physical pain I’m suffering from mysterious reasons is alright though.
I feel pathetic. As a failed daughter, as a human, and as a privileged brat that has barely accomplished anything since I graduated from all the “top programs” over and over again in the last few years. I wish I can at least pretend I’m fine. Thanks for reading, I already feel better.

Wednesday November 1 2023I moved into my artist studio in Queens today. I hope to take myself seriously by paying $800/month to rent this windowless space in the name of making art.

Thursday September 21 2023
zhuyan&#38;nbsp;is in NYC for an art resdiency, I rented out my bedroom to her. Visited Chloe Li at Columbia’s MFA studio with zhuyan, had great tea, great talk and great dinner.

Tuesday August 22 2023Had a studio visit via zoom with Mari. It feels great to be remembered by someone.&#38;nbsp;

Monday July 3 2023Made it out of China after quite an adventure...still recovering from all the experiences...Grateful for all the help received.&#38;nbsp;

Friday May 19 2023
Walked the Tisch graduation, had a concussion, had a really bad allergic reaction. But, period cramps not as painful this time, and Nic and Ayo took care of me. Flying to Shanghai and staying for two months soon.

Wednesday April 26 2023Feeling grateful to all the new friends and mentors I met in the NYU Tisch IMA Low Res program, but also appreciating the long lasting friendships from Chicago, specifically to Susan, Mari, Christine, Zhuyan and Liza lately. This is also the second time I got COVID on my birthday. Feeling terrible physically but mentally doing great.

Wednesday March 29 2023I’m grateful for all the artists I met at my museum and the auction house jobs. Together, we got insulted by visitors, helped art handling and sold 2.8 million dollars works, while getting paid $1 above minimum wage, with 100% professionalism. The love and care we have for each other continues even after leaving the jobs.&#38;nbsp;

Tuesday January 17 2023
Many loves from Berlin this month. Will be back.&#38;nbsp;

Friday April 15 2022I’m grateful to participate in Artist Nayland Blake’s Got An Art Problem? project for the 2022 Whitney Biennial. After an hour coversation inside a museum glass room, we exchaged drawings with each other.

Monday November 8 2021During my brief 3 months at SVA, I appreciated Artist and Professor Peter Hristoff‘s kind heart, encouragement and honest conversations with me. Today is my last day seeing Peter, as I’ve decided to not go back to school. Thank you.
Tuesday March 9 2021

I am grateful for all the artist friends and mentors I’ve met over the years in Chicago, some actually came to my MFA artist lecture today. It was a virtual one instead of the pretencious in-person version inside a room adjacent to the mighty Art Institute of Chicago (museum) main building, that I’ve been looking forward to since 2017, but whatever. Nothing matters after March 2020 anyway.

As I’m graduating soon, I thought to write down all the artist mentors/professors that have truly either inspired me and/or cared about me or my practice during my years at Chicago. Most of these people I don’t talk to anymore (because I’m pretty socially awkward), but at least for a moment in life, I truly appreciated our encounters:

Michiko Itatani, Mari Eastman, Tyson Reeder, Jacob Tonski,&#38;nbsp;Sam Jaffe, Olivia Petrides,&#38;nbsp;Gaylen Gerber, Matt Morris, Susan Kraut, Magdalena Moskalewicz, Claire Ashley, Mark Jeffery, Judd Morrissey, Kristin McWharter, Allie n Steve Mullen,&#38;nbsp;Benjamin Melamed Pearson, Peter Burr, and&#38;nbsp;Simon Anderson. Thank you.
Friday February 19 2021
I am grateful for Artist &#38;amp; Professor &#38;amp; Department Chair&#38;nbsp;Michelle Grabner introduced Sianne Ngai’s Theory of Gimmick: Aesthetic Judgment and Capitalist Form (2020) to me during our MFA advising hours. This single exchange of knowledge was valuable depiste the rest of the semester was more...(eh) Some of my studio practices finally started making sense to myself after reading more about Ngai’s works.&#38;nbsp;

Our Aesthetic Categories: Zany, Cute, Interesting (2015)Friday February 6 2020I am grateful for Nic Johnson coming to my place for some dumplings, with a gift of the University of Chicago hoodie, following with a movie night out watching Marcel Duchamp: Art of the Possible. And then one thing led to another, we somehow became offically in a relationahip that night. I met Nic during my “Fuck Around the City to Loosen Up In Order to Become a Real Artist” journey. Needless to say how that turned out. Nic had brought me much more than what the journey could’ve done though, so I’m happy how it turned out I think 😳 (this is my effort of PDA for Nic).

Thursday November 28 2019I am grateful for my new artist friend ye zhuyan (葉竹妍). I have been in the same art history class with her this whole semester, but we didn’t talk at all until last week (she’s a social butterfly though lol). zhuyan is a first-year MFA in Photo, from China, but studied abroad in Taiwan for 4 years. She learned I had a heartbroken break up earlier this week, and insisted on taking me out on Thanksgiving, making sure I am not just home alone crying 🥹. We took a long train ride to suburbs, took naked photos (of her) in the woods. She introudced me to her friend, Yue Xu, a first-year MFA in Sculpture. It was a really fun day and way to spend Thanksgiving without family. Thank you.

Friday September 6 2019I am grateful for knowing Susan Kraut. It is her show opening tonight, many people attended. When I was a post-bacc student 2 years ago, she has been taking good care of me. When I decided not to come back to Chicago last year, she continued to stay in touch with me throughout the year, whether I was in Israel, Palestine, Taiwan or Japan. When I decided to come back this year for the MFA program, she makes sure I am adjusting fine and offer to take me out for brunch every week.

Thursday August 29 2019Caught a flu last night, and still don’t have an apartment to stay in Chicago. Very very grateful to my artist friends,&#38;nbsp;Christine Tuner and Liza Eilers, for letting me stay with them for the first three weeks of the semester for free. Not only for free but treats me like a guest, and take super good care of me. Although I am still very new to the Midwest, I already feel super welcomed, and ready to call this place home for the next two years at least. Hopefully, the Chicago Winter won’t change my mind.
Fall 2019
I took a Graduate Professional Practice Seminar course taught by Artist Matt Morris at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In that course, Matt got us did a tons of stuff that I really felt pain doing. For examples, generating 100 questions before an artist visit, writing gratitude diary, and making busienss cards. Today (March 17, 2023), when I was going through my messy hard drive, I found the word docx. with all my gratitude entries from that class. And wow, I actaully really appreciate them.
As a person who’s used to living through life with hates and complains, I thought to try to pick up this gratitude practice again. Anyway, I don’t know why I’m explaining as if anyone’s ever gonna read through these stuff 😂 If you’ve read till this point, you are a little bit too obsessed with me yo. But if you do continue, just want to remind you that auto-correct and spelling is off on this page, I’m a FOB, and I have no idea how to write in proper Engrish grammar and spelling without the help of technology. If broken Engrish pains you, please leave.</description>

︎
︎︎︎(god forbid real artist to have LinkedIn profile. so here’s mine.)

I started working in the art world, hoping it would make me stop feeling like an outsider. But 3 years later, I still feel like an outsider. The only difference is that I’m no longer sure if I even want to be an insider, even if I could.Don’t get me wrong—unless someone miraculously cures my social anxiety and natural awkwardness, I doubt I’d ever have a real chance of making it. What really sucks is seeing friends who are making it feel more and more distant. It’s reached a point where I don’t think we can even talk anymore.

To Start:
USA, NYC, Bubble Tea
I came to the United States in August 2007,for more than 12 years, I was a resident taxes payer, even though I did not have legal rights to work. Which means, while I couldn’t make any income outside of school work study, I had to pay for what I made overseas. That’s right, I love the USA so much, I agreed to a crazy deal like this. No legal rights, but pay all the overseas taxes again in the US.&#38;nbsp;

As a result, when I could finally work legally in the States in 2021, I immediately applied to jobs at famous bubble tea shops in New York City. Working as a bubble tea shop barista was my dream job since 9th grade. Soon, as the oldest but also only Taiwanese part-time worker at a Midtown Manhattan bubble tea + fried chicken restaurant, I was exhausted everyday, but also instantly became the star employee (I rarely feel so confident about one thing, but I really was an exceptional service worker, let along boba tea was originated from my motherland). When I finally had enough fun of it, and was ready to quit, managers from the HQ came in suit to ask me to stay. I agreed to stay for another week and helped train their franchisee who flew in from Florida for training.

The Museum Job
While it was fun making drinks and food all-day none-stop, I quickly found myself drifting far away from the Art World. So, when there was a gallery assistant opening at the Whitney Museum of American Art, I applied. After two rounds of interview and 3 phone calls to my references, I got the job. I worked through the Jasper Johns Retrospective, the&#38;nbsp;Making Knowing: Craft in Art, the Jennifer Packer Solo Exhibition, the&#38;nbsp;My Barbarian’s Survey Exhibition, the 2022 Whitney Biennial, and it was finally time to quit.

&#60;img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ef59bee22a2abe076f65d01deb949fa19811aa3ad0ebf0f955771e9d583f119b/43CF2358-4487-479D-85AD-866DB0768715.jpeg" data-mid="172487979" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ef59bee22a2abe076f65d01deb949fa19811aa3ad0ebf0f955771e9d583f119b/43CF2358-4487-479D-85AD-866DB0768715.jpeg" /&#62;

All great artwork aside, the amount of insults and humiliation from the museum visitors daily truly came as a surprise. I’ve never been so belittled straight in my face by total strangers in my life.
Internally, the fight between the museum and the union formation was also a fascinating learning lesson to me. Honestly speaking, I don’t know if I can ever learn to trust again after going through all that toxic drama inside the institution.
However, I am grateful to all the learning opportunities provided by this job, whether those came intensionally or not. I learned so much about the BS in the art world, straight from the core, especially through working all those VIP events and encountering al the big names in the art world. I am also grateful for all the amazing artists slash colleagues I met at the job.

Staff drawings on the board behind the coat check area, managers came to erase all the drawings regularly.

Staff are not allowed to take tips at the museum, but sometimes a visitor would insist on dropping something. While most days I was overwhilmed by the rudeness and insults from vistors, angel-like visitors occasionally appear. The most polite, and the most eager to learn about art (and then maybe casually dropped a $50 at coat check, winked, and left).&#38;nbsp;

While I worked most days of a week at the Whitney, I picked up another gallery assistant job at the Christie’s during my museum off days. (*Christie’s,the very auction house that sold Beeple’s NFT at $69 millions during the pandemic.) Due to the NDA I signed, not much will be spoken here (yet).

	A Deliberative Democracy Experiment
 2022-2023&#38;nbsp;A digital readymade that aims to create a safe yet brave place to trigger/facilitate discussions and debates.

&#60;img width="2298" height="1394" width_o="2298" height_o="1394" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/848eb7bb8b6857ac09aebbf0bab72e43055c856eba02d8d5c29defb442e555ce/Screenshot-2024-06-28-at-04.11.29.png" data-mid="213744546" border="0" data-scale="69" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/848eb7bb8b6857ac09aebbf0bab72e43055c856eba02d8d5c29defb442e555ce/Screenshot-2024-06-28-at-04.11.29.png" /&#62;

This project is about navigating the duality of truth in an era that is getting harder and harder to make friends and communicate honestly without offending anyone.
在這個時代，在不冒犯任何人的前提下誠實交流變得越來越困難。&#38;nbsp;

&#60;img width="2304" height="1292" width_o="2304" height_o="1292" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/11d123337fac3cebca41ada17596f111f10fb32a5b6213499aed4ceb22e8d82e/Screenshot-2024-06-28-at-04.13.59.png" data-mid="213744555" border="0" data-scale="70" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/11d123337fac3cebca41ada17596f111f10fb32a5b6213499aed4ceb22e8d82e/Screenshot-2024-06-28-at-04.13.59.png" /&#62;
The project is built using Miro Board, a privately owned whiteboard software/ online tool that is widely used by companies and educational institutions as a digital collaboration platform. The project's content is built using several internet-based news sources, as well as clip art illustrations from an open licensed Japanese website called Irasutoya. This particular way of building the project is my tribute to all the readymade art before me. I found the form of the project itself also connects to the recent boom in AI generative tools and the conversation around it.&#38;nbsp;

Miro board became my choice of platform because of its web friendliness, intuitiveness, and its mix of high-tech and low-tech at the same time. I particularly love its sticky notes function, which allows users to stick anywhere on the board and write in. This resonates with the usage of sticky notes in creating a physical “democracy wall” during many student movements and protests globally in the past few years. I also chose Miro because of the ability to see the live actions of all other users while everyone stays anonymous. Although Miro board software comes with a built-in function to host live voting, I chose to build a visual and manual voting system because the action of each user’s computer mouse is what I find important as a part of the interaction and discussion.

&#60;img width="2856" height="1614" width_o="2856" height_o="1614" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/dee10d8de58f95f77da659f4e6a101fabe7e0e9ffeb1e00f99d54e58532e749c/Screenshot-2024-06-28-at-04.38.20.png" data-mid="213745166" border="0" data-scale="76" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/dee10d8de58f95f77da659f4e6a101fabe7e0e9ffeb1e00f99d54e58532e749c/Screenshot-2024-06-28-at-04.38.20.png" /&#62;
The miro board I built is a huge treasure hunting map/game. Participants follow the dotted lines to go to various voting stations and conduct live voting together. If they don’t like their options, they can choose not to vote, or start a post-it war on the side to share their thoughts with other participants instead. Based on the partcipated group, I start each map/game with some specfiic, relevant ice-breaker questions. For example, during a session with students and faculty from a graduate program at the New York University with roughly 70% Americans and 30% Chinese partcipants, I started up with some maybe awkward but maybe funny NYU brand name ROI question for people to vote on.&#38;nbsp;

&#60;img width="2776" height="1464" width_o="2776" height_o="1464" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/ef8a26e1c0c4eba4148a469236c78babed1587c8a5dac301a5e51200ee9019d4/Screenshot-2024-06-28-at-04.34.47.png" data-mid="213745049" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/ef8a26e1c0c4eba4148a469236c78babed1587c8a5dac301a5e51200ee9019d4/Screenshot-2024-06-28-at-04.34.47.png" /&#62;

A little bit background about the project: Growing up, my family constantly fought over political differences. The fights got intense often, and I remember hiding in the bedroom, praying the sounds of quarreling would end soon. As a result, as an adult, I became proudly politically indifferent, seeing anyone who engaged in political activities as a fanatic. However, as the old saying goes: “Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you.” It took me a decade of trying to escape from understanding politics to realize that freedom should not be taken for granted. Without us exercising the civic duty of maintaining, challenging, and participating in thoughtful democratic discussions and decision-making, the freedom we enjoy in everyday life can disappear in an instant.

The advancement of social networks, and generative AI tools, while bringing many conveniences to our lives, have also made fake news more and more natural. The line between fact and fiction is now completely blurred, as is the line between truth and fake. The ability to arrive at a “fact” that most people can agree on seems almost impossible.

Even within a like-minded group, having earnest conversations on societal topics had also become difficult, especially with cancel culture as the dominating solution for resolving a conflict. Surrounded by these situations in my daily life, I set this project as a journey to explore tools and methods that can possibly help initiate and/or facilitate honest conversations on complex topics within groups of people.

Additional:
This project was also introduced as a thesis / work in progress in a 10-min presentation in June 2023. The video provides a more personal glance behind the scene that led to the formation of this project and idea.&#38;nbsp;

When learning about the communication and networking technologies with media artist Sarah Grant and Danja Vasiliev during my visit at&#38;nbsp;Studio Weise7 in Berlin, I was faciniated by a lot of fun works The Critical Engineering Working Group has done in the past, such as the Men In Grey (2009-2014), and the Newstweek (2011).

My interest lies in the potential manipulation of information transmitted over insecure network connections. While the switch from "http" to "https" has made data manipulation more challenging in recent years, certain loopholes remain. Surprisingly, upon conducting a Google search, I discovered that many of the top 100 unsecured websites are linked to the Chinese Communist Party - including the official government site, the People's Daily, and Baidu, China's equivalent of Google. The reasons behind this trend remain unclear.身為一個千禧世代，我對於駭入不安全網絡連接中來傳輸信息一直都抱有幻想。雖然近年大部分網頁都從「http」升級到了「https」讓駭進系統進行數據操縱變得更具挑戰性。令人驚訝的是，在進行一陣Google搜尋後，我發現世界排名前100的不安全網站有過半都與中國共產黨有關，其中包括官方政府網站《人民日報》和中國的Google：百度。這一趨勢背後的原因不明。&#38;nbsp;

With the help from Studio Weise7, I learned to utilize&#38;nbsp;Raspberry Pi as a Wi-Fi antenna, and using Squid and Privoxy to filter words and links people can access on the Wi-Fi connection.

Despite functioning as a regular free Wi-Fi, this network alters user data when accessing unsecured websites, such as the People's Daily - the principal news media outlet controlled by the Chinese government. My initial steps involved redirecting hyperlinks on the People's Daily front page, ones lauding Xi Jinping's achievements, towards the Human Rights Watch's online report detailing Xi's human rights violations over the past year.

After clicking on the top banner, instead of being direct to the site displaying all Xi’s accomplisments, site visitors are directed to the Human Rights Watch Section on China’s human rights issue instead.

Upon noticing the disproportionately high mentions of "China" and "U.S." on Chinese government-controlled websites, I decided to subtly manipulate the narrative. Simply by swapping all mentions of "China" with "Taiwan" and "U.S." with "China", I completely transformed the news context. This marked my first successful venture into the spread of fabricated news. Consequently, site visitors will not see the original text, but my modified version as illustrated below.

Conceptually, I was pleased with the outcome, demonstrating the ease with which the news and information we receive can be altered seamlessly. Yet, for a touch of whimsy and exhibition purposes, I introduced a harmless but noticeable modification: transforming all instances of "Xi" into "Winnie-the-Pooh."

There are several famous cases of people and companies got into serious troubled after poking this harmelss joke. The creation and user interaction with this project brought me great amusement. It's curious how many Chinese government sites remain unencrypted, particularly when I discovered a 2014 article on one such site extolling the virtues of encryption. The situation remains a mystery.

In December 2016, my mother's passing initiated a year-long Taoist-Buddhist funeral.&#38;nbsp;

For the initial 100 days, all women in the household were confined to an unending cycle of folding paper lotuses and reciting the Heart Sutra, burdened by long hours and stringent rituals prescribed by the daoshi. Amid this labor, the omnipresent symbol "卍" etched itself into our lives, adorning our scriptures, paper for the lotuses, and the very hall where we knelt in remembrance and duty.

In the wake of the ceremonial obligations (2017-2018), the act of folding lotuses morphed into an involuntary personal ritual, a haunting refrain I couldn't escape. Secluded within my Chicago studio, I found myself instinctively folding, sketching symbols reminiscent of the lotus papers, wrestling with the ambiguity of my connection to these remnants of tradition.

A Year Since Then (2017-2018)
In response, I crafted a video, a testament to my struggle. The symbol "卍" served as a harsh reminder of familial sexism, the poignant loss of my mother, and my own yearning for spiritual guidance.

Seeing the “卍” being cancelled (2018-2019)
I relocated to Japan for seven months amidst Tokyo's frenzied preparation for the 2020 Olympics. A contentious debate caught my attention - the proposed removal of all “卍”
 symbols from Buddhist temple maps, prompted by Western tourist complaints. My emotions were nebulous, my relationship with the symbol itself complicated, leaving me unsure whether to champion its preservation.

Defending the “卍”? Perhaps... (2019)

&#60;img width="960" height="1280" width_o="960" height_o="1280" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4c2de36f3d6ca83e5d6fb5f38231fca4fbbdb8f197fa2db71587b0377392a689/shrine.jpg" data-mid="197878611" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/960/i/4c2de36f3d6ca83e5d6fb5f38231fca4fbbdb8f197fa2db71587b0377392a689/shrine.jpg" /&#62;

In truth, I grappled with my intentions. Was I defending the symbol or was this another echo of my mother's passing? I couldn't escape the knowledge that Western gaze was fixated solely on the symbol, potentially reducing my culture to a mere icon. This exploitation gnawed at me, yet, I couldn't help but consider it a form of retribution against a culture that had, in its own way, inflicted pain upon me.

p5 Project: Paper Lotuses (2020)
I breathed life into paper lotuses, allowing them to float and fade as they would in the symbolic post-burning ritual. Accompanied by a monologue, a funeral scene soundtrack from a film I saw years ago, the project becomes a moving homage to my mother’s year-long funeral.

I embarked on a research project, delving into the global semiotic discourse surrounding the swastika symbol. The culmination of this inquiry was an online poll. The poll aims to engender a public consensus on the boundaries of acceptance in our society. Collectively, all participants will help decide where the global society as a whole draws a line on the appropriate usage of the swastika symbol. Of course, a yes-no poll comes with a lot of bias. However, is it not how our society makes decisions on what to be canceled and what not nowadays?Participants after the poll may be surprised to discover that all options they just deemed "inappropriate" are propoer used of the symbol in existing cultures, some for hundreds or even thousands of years, despite having no connection to Nazism. Yet they still face cancellation. However, we should also not ignore that there are still many neo-Nazis in the world, hence the sensitivity towards the swastika symbol is understandable. I created this work not to advocate for a specific viewpoint on whether the none-Nazi swastika symbols should be completely removed in the world, but simply to encourage mutual learning and respect on all sides through this controversial poll.

This project was made feeling supressed while spending a summer in Shanghai, China. And was inspired by the few internet westeren celeberities in China, who are famous of yelling out pro-China’s Community Party with passion.&#38;nbsp;

The installation was built inside a used-to-be-precious, prime location studio space. Possibly the most expensive artist studio one can ever get in Chicago. It was given to the full-ride scholarship MFA student in Painting department of the year. However, due to the strict visitor policy because of COVID, studio spaces like this one were vacant all-year long in the almighty Painting Department. They were all just sitting there waiting for me to invade.&#38;nbsp;A lot of the vibe in this installation was influenced by how I felt being in a ghosted (painting) community in 2020/21, trying to make art, while the world was burning down. I was constantly feeling sorry, to my painting, to the world, to the people believing in me, and to myself.The installation was made with found objects (my old exercise paintings, videos, and trash from the community trashcan...etc). The installation also came with "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend Podcast" playing on loop in the background, which was what I usually put on while working at the studio alone overnight.
